Sophomore Schedules

Monday: Art & Econ
Tuesday: Lang/Lit & History
Wednesday: Music & Math
Thursday: Super Quiz (Geology) & Speech/Interview/Essay

Announcement: If you'd like to post a powerpoint, e-mail it to Ms. Kelly to post on Snapgrades. If you have lesson notes you'd like to post, e-mail it to me or your group lieutenant. Group lieutenants who don't have administrative privileges: please e-mail me (Sarah).

BTW, people. I don't think changes to individual section pages are e-mailed to people who follow the blog, so just check them every so often when they're updated. Or maybe someone left a blog about it.

16 Sept 2010: Kay, I'm getting depressed. Why don't you guys ever comment?! *cries a little*
Whatever. People who I've granted administrative privileges and already have a page up and running here: make your lesson announcements on your page. See Language & Literature page for reference.

Woohoo! Life rocks! I love you, dude who fixed our internet!

Because now I can blog, read manga, and twitter like there's no tomorrow.
Weeeeee!!

Okay, so here's what we did today:

Music:
Music: Gott! welch' dunkel heir~ of which you guys complained we spent approximately an hour on. WHICH IS NOT MY FAULT, OKIE DOKIES? Little Miss VANISHA, and PRIYA, and KAREN were trying to make things difficult by saying something that wasn't actually contradicting what I was saying but they thought it was and I was trying to contradict that.. yeah whatever, it doesn't really matter anymore.

Anyhoos, some quick facts:
Selection is by Ludwig van Beethoven (who also wrote another peice in acadec curriculum, Eroica)
the selection is from his only opera, Fidelio
the libretto (aka text) is by somebody else (can't remember who.  wikipedia is confusing, and im too lazy to look into my resource guide right this moment)
the story: Florestan in prison for saying his political beliefs, wife (Leonore) makes friends with jailer (Rocco) and saves husband, evil antagonist is Don Pizarro, and enlightened Governor frees Florestan.

here's some guy singing it:

I must warn you, he looks like my dad when he has low blood sugar. ;D
Also, they cut off the intstrumental intro. (remember, the selection consists of 4 sections)

Art: Jacque-Louis David
What i can remember: he like Rafael and Caravaggio (who is important because of the influence of chiasroscuro)
David tried to win the Prix de Rome 5 times, and when he did he didn't have to go to a school first because his teacher (Vien) became the director of the French academy in Rome.  he filled up 12 sketchbooks there, and his obsession with the [omg, im like, totally watching fashion vids on youtube between sentences-- i effing love where karl lagerfeld is taking chanel! ;D] classical styles is noticeable in all of his paintings for the rest of his life. he's very disegno (more of a line than a color dude).  UMMMM... becca doesn't like his last great work, and you guys thought the painting was very... sexual.  OH!! David was on the Committee of Public Safety, and he just let his friends (ie Lavoisier) be executed, because he thought it was O.K. to execute the OK guys, because you need to sacrifice for the good of the nation (which was portrayed in many of his paintings).
Becca also went over Ingres, who apparently can't be categorized as one type of painter because his styles are so versatile.  from reading a few lines off of wikipedia, i find that he hated Delacroix (which i think becca mentioned).  Ingres, like David, liked Raphael too, and was very disegno... He did this one painting of Napoleon that makes him look like a king (as opposed to David's, who makes him look like an ordinary dude). His paintings look so real, you'd think they were a picture (think of that portrait that rebecca really liked of that weird old man) .  The painting we're doing by him is a portrait of some Broglie lady , and the lady is shown as rich, Catholic, and pretty.  And rich.  And noble! (the coat of arms).  And rich. Did I mention wealthy?
Okie... and there's a whole bunch more that rebecca said that's stuffed somewhere in the back of my mind to be recalled much later.  Please leave comments on anything you'd like everyone to remember!

Lastly, we did---- ECON!! which I'm not really good at, because... yeah.  Idk why, but BECCA DON'T MAKE FUN OF ME DAMN YOU. Dx  [omg, so now im watching shinee vids.  just to let you guys know...] Anyhoo, we just discussed the stuff on the Demidec cram kit, and we only got through the Fundamentals part, soo... i'll try fitting in the Microecon and macroecon on another day [we may have to extend the hours.... OR MAYBE YOU GUYS CAN STOP TALKING SO MUCH, GEEEEZZZ...] but ANYHOO!
we went over stuff like:
-scarcity, wants, etc.
-the 3 types of costs: accounting, opportunity, and economic (accounting+opportunity)
-the 4 factors of production: land, labor, capital, and entrepeneurship
-PPF, aka PPC and what determines whether it curves out, in, or is equal
-the assumption that econ agents will only produce something if they will benefit from it
-marginal analysis (how to make the graph, and how to explain it in a way that it gets through my thick head)
-positive and normative economics
-externalities
-sunk costs (which im not sure if i completely understand still)
-the types of economies: traditional, market, planned, and mixed
-the great questions!
1) what to produce
2)how to produce
3)who will it benefit
and maybe 4) how much to produce? but this one is under debate

-when and why markets exist
-absolute vs. comparative advantages

this is basically everything from p. 4-8 on the cram kit guides [there are 36 pages total]
so theres A LOT we didn't go over.
which means more blogs to look at on here! whoopee!

I'll be posting something on Microecon in a few hours, so sit tight young ninjas!
Here's something to listen to!
